March 25, 2015

Note from Susan “Victorious” about the following thank you: I picked up an envelope from one of the chemo nurses at SC Oncology (“SCOA”) on Wed., March 25th: The beautiful card had this personal message inside:

Shirley R. - "Thank you so much for the goody bag. I love everything in it." "It means so much to me. I am giving you a little donation to help with your work."

As God was working His plan with me that Wed., I met a cancer patient and her husband on the elevator while at SCOA. When we got off the elevator, I sat in a chair and her husband wheeled her up to me so we could talk. She is fighting cancer for the third time. I got the needed information from her in order to do a special Sparkle Caps gift bag. Because of all she was going through, I did a super duper bag with a few extras I knew would uplift and empower her and put an even bigger smile on her face that day. Her husband took her to the radiation dept., and I sat in the "lobby" making her gift bag. I know she was going through that bag on her way home. She said she knew that she was dying of cancer, but she and her husband had smiles on their faces and knew that each day was one to be lived with blessings.

So SHIRLEY R., your "small" donation was used to do the extras for a fellow cancer patient that very day! God is blessing both these women through the gift bags, and I am always blessed with the honor of doing them! Susan "Victorious"

March 12, 2015

Thank you, from a fellow cancer survivor.”

Michele H. / Susan “Victorious” -
Michele lives in CA. Her sister Kim, who lives in GA, sponsored a gift bag for her little sister on June 20th. Kim flew to CA to take care of Michele post-op. In an e-mail, Kim said that Michele loved the handmade angel and looked beautiful in her red cap, but it took her a bit to send me a picture. Chemo has been particularly difficult for Michele. One day at home, she fell after passing out and ended up with three stitches in her lip and a big bruise on her check. Thereafter, Kim flew back to CA on July 11th to give her sister “some big sissy TLC and cooking. . .” Nothing like some sister-love to make one feel much better!

“I have never forgotten th
is kind gesture and in appreciation for your thoughtfulness to me, I am enclosing a check for $____ so that you may provide one of these beautiful gift bags to a another woman cancer patient who will need uplifting materials to help her through her struggle.

I am happy to report that she has gone through a lumpectomy and finished 8 rounds of chemo and 34 radiation treatments! Yes, Letitia, SURVIVORS ROCK! Love, Susan "Victorious"

Adrian S. F. - Excerpts from her thank you found on Sparkle Caps:  “I wanted to thank The Sparkle Cap Project. July 16, 2013 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, July 31, 2013 I had 2 lumpectomies 1 was cancer, 1 was not. My world as I knew it was changed forever.” “I was devastated just like any woman would be, but after a good cry survival mode kicked in and has been going strong since. I have a wonderful support group, my husband, 3 adult children and their spouses, 5 grand children, family, friends, Church family and most importantly my God. He has calmed the storm that rages within me!!!”

“Through out this journey I have met some of the best people in the world, from my medical team to some wonderful organizations that are out there to help in anyway they can, such as The Sparkle Cap Project, the photo is of me with my awesome gift bag, it's was filled with love and prayers. I know cause I could feel them as I was taking each book, letters, brochures, pamphlets, small gifts, a beautiful handmade Angel and of course the prettiest sparkle hot pink cap out of the gift bag!!! As you see by my photo I haven't started chemo..... Yikes..... Yes chemo yet, but the sparkly cap I will wear with pride when I do.

“One of the letters was from Susan, the lady I messaged many times about different things to do with the project. This letter helped me so much and to her Thank You!!” Susan was telling how she dreaded her hair coming out, how her husband wanted to be the one to cut it all off when that day came, well it came and her husband got everything ready and cut her hair, but once it was over it was the fear itself that was the worse. I came to realize by reading Susan's words that she hit the nail on the head, FEAR, is the worst I always feared the words you have cancer, but I was told "you have cancer" and I'm ok, I feared my surgery 2 lumpectomies, I had surgery and I'm ok, now the next steps are chemo, losing my hair and radiation and guess what? I'm going to be ok!!!!!!!!!!

“Thank you Susan for enlightening me to that thought!!!

“In the photo also is my sweet youngest grand daughter, they also sent her books, socks and a handmade Angel. I am forever grateful to God and him allowing my paths to cross with such kindhearted people such as Susan and each and everyone that helps in any way with the The Sparkle Cap Project!!! God Bless each and everyone!!!!”

“PS. I sent in the lady at my church's info so she also can wear a hot pink sparkly cap with pride!!!!!”  [Note:  Sparkle Caps sent a gift bag of blessings to Adrian’s friend.]

Lori P.T. - "So I go to check my mail today and I see this box...I think I am not expecting anything and I haven't ordered anything...I look at the return address and see it's from The Sparkle Caps Project...I am sitting here with my daughter going through the books and started to read the notes and decided before I end up crying again, I am going to open one letter/note a day! I am beyond thankful for receiving this and for you thinking of me. I am honored to help others see how beautiful they are through this and tend to not look at myself but this has made me smile and will continue to for many years to come. Thank you again! All my love!"  (NOTE:  Lori is the subject of the August Spotlight on Recipient.)

Tina H. -  “Dear Susan and Sparkle Caps Volunteers, I recently received my gift bag, with pink sparkle cap, on Tuesday, July 30, 2013. I was overjoyed and so excited to look through all the notes, little gifts, books, and of course the caps!  I have been battling my second round of breast cancer for the past year. I have had so many set backs. Its been a very difficult road. My faith in God and the wonderful care I have received from my caregivers is what has brought me this far. I just wanted to let you and your organization know how appreciative I am of your work!! It made my day!!! Thanks.”

Mary B. -  "When I was at my lowest, my nurse navigator introduced me to the Lovely Lady who handles The Sparkle Caps gift bags......Words just couldn't do justice to the feelings i had when I received that bag,....but I have plenty of words for the kindness and openness given to me not only in my gift bag, but in my day to day life after meeting Ms. "Victorious" in person. She is an awesome lady who cares so much about others, she is a true inspiration to those of us who are still trying to figure out what we should do next, in our recovery and our spiritual and emotional healing. I have received so much advice, suggestions, books, and just some plain ole knowledge!!.... and I have a true friend. Thru her, I feel we ALL can be VICTORIOUS....Thanks for your inspiration and your continued unwavering support to this creature trying to find the way. Much love to you Susan, You are indeed, Victorious!! Mary"

Jackie received a Sparkle Caps gift bag in November 2012.  "I just have to tell you this Susan. Remember the things you sent my way with the blue Sparkle Cap. Envelopes with messages of experiences you went thru. They were in my lil bag in my other room still. Bout to head for sleep. . .when I took a second look at my wonderful envelopes. They made me feel so good that night. Slowly I reread them. Meant more to me that nite than the week I received them. Treasure to me. Thank you again for sharing the things you did. Will be putting all my special things in a notebook of memories. Hugs, Jackie"

Kimberly B. – "When I walked into the exam room the Sparkle Caps Project bag was on the table, I jokingly told the nurse you should not have brought me a gift, she said I didn't. We both looked at the bag and realized it was for me, I can't tell you the love and joy I felt at that moment. After the bad weekend I had and knowing the bag was for me lifted my spirits immediately. So thank you very much for allowing the sun to shine on a cloudy day."

With Evelyn's permission, I am sharing her hand-crafted card with you. More than a reflection of what I do, IT IS A REFLECTION of what GOD DOES through me. Evelyn received a gift bag last Dec., sponsored by her sister Lisa. She has been on her own unique journey and has made so much progress. I have been so moved by the love that she has shared. Gwendolyn W. - “Dear Susan, Thank you and all the others who helped to put the Sparkle Caps Project gift bag together. I’m sure every recipient has been uplifted. I believe God will bless everyone who helped with this project in a special way. Thank you for the books. . . . Please thank your sister-in-law [Nancy] for the lovely angel which I have hung in my curio [cabinet] where I can see it every day; Sonie, who made the warm green and purple hat, and Vickie for the useful bookmarks. The royal blue sparkle cap is beautiful, but most of all thanks for the Bible verses and encouraging words. I will keep you and the other ladies in my prayers & ask you to do the same for me.”

The following is an excerpt from a beautiful thank you note that I received from a March recipient: "I am very touched that your group puts these delicious bags together for total strangers. I guess I shouldn't be, though, because cancer and God make us all sisters and kindred spirits. . . ."

Susan "Victorious" - THANK YOU!   A HUMONGOUS THANK YOU to Renee Tollison, who is a SC court reporter and heads up the fundraising committee for the SC State Court Reporters Association’s Fundraiser for Sparkle Caps. Joan - "Susan, my oncology nurse presented me with my Sparkle Caps bag filled with wonderful presents and letters that you made just for me. Your selections of books and quotes speaks to my fears and hopes. God spoke to me when I thought I was dieing and I pleaded with God to take me. I saw a brightness and felt such warmth and then I heard Him say " It Is Not About Dieing, It's About Living". Some time living is very hard. Then someone like you comes along and what you say and do pulls me through. Thank you. My 54 year old daughter has just gone through a mastectomy and she is doing fine. I will share my sparkle caps present with her because there is so much wisdom in there."

Jo R. - "I love The Red Sea Rules. Very comforting."

March 9, 2013

Jo R. - "I was blessed, yes blessed, by my caregiver's bag and the fact that a fellow court reporter thought to send it to me. It means so much to know others are thinking of you in times like this and sharing in the journey, that understand the roller coaster of emotions. My sister so enjoyed my sharing my bag with her. She was too ill to read or get out of bed to need a cap by that time, but she did so enjoy my bag with me and appreciated someone thinking to do such a nice thing for me. A part of the gift that I most treasure is the note of introduction from you, Susan, and the very touching and heartfelt note you sent to me after I lost my sister. It was very unexpected and very appreciated. How well spoken you are, Susan, and how much your encouragement means! Thank you so very much. I will send a donation in honor of my sister to pay it forward and will spread the word as much as I can to help you grow this ministry...a real blessing. Thank you so much for stepping out to help others."

Sherri M. - "I just received The Sparkle Caps Project gift bag and cannot begin to describe how it made me feel!  The purple cap is so awesome and I can wear it now for the next coupld weeks before I lose my hair.  The goodies, cards, books and letters and something that will occupy my time reading them all for a long time.  I cannot say enough about Susan!  She was prompt in answering my initial request, and proceeded to give me encouragement and information several times that day.  I will be sure to sponsor some bags when I am well and maybe even contribute some items for her bags! I was touched and impressed with my whole experience.  Susan... YOU GO GIRL!  You are awesome and I will never forget your kindness!  Love Sherri"

Brooke S. - "This is a wonderful thing you are doing here!  When I received my bag, it felt like Christmas!  It feels so good to know that someone you have never met cares so much to help you and remind you that you are important and that there is HOPE!  I was overcome with emotion at the beauty of this amazingly thoughtful gift.  It meant so much.  Thank you!"

December 13, 2012

The following is a thank you Sparkle Caps received from a recent recipient of a Sparkle Caps gift bag: "When I arrived at SCOA last Tuesday for treatment, I received the most incredible gift bag from you! It was filled with so many useful, practical ...items like the sparkling cap (how did you know I love purple?!?!), popular, health-related and game books, countless letters and inspiring letters, quotes and prayers to aid me on this journey. I THANK YOU and all the angels who assisted you from the bottom of my heart.  I am overcome with the outpouring of loving support and resources that continue to appear, both in tangible and intangible form. I never realized how many blessings were part of this medical journey until it became my journey, too.  For all you and others do to share your ‘tender, loving care’ generously and selflessly, I applaud you and I thank God for you.”

August 24, 2012

Carol D. - "Susan, Jane loved the Sparkle Cap and the rest of the items in the bag.  In fact, she has passed on the info regarding the Project to the people at her hospital treatment center.  And today she has posted 3 pictures of herself wearing her Sparkle Cap on Facebook.  The comments have all been very positive.  Thanks for what you are doing....it has to be such a morale booster for women losing their hair.  I know that Jane had purchased 2 wigs before she started chemo, but told me she HATED wearing them and went to caps instead.  Now that I know about the Project, you will be hearing from me again if I know of anyone else who is going through chemo.  Thanks again!"

Vicki E. - "Carol, I think Susan and her wonderful Sparkle Caps Project are truly blessings from heaven. I know how your friend feels about wigs! My Sparkle Caps are my favorites and I wear them every single day! When I wear them, I think how this project is so awesome, heartwarming, and touched by our angel, Susan."

August 4, 2012

Mary B. - "I just have to post how much I loved it when I got my cap from someone who didn't even know me.....I will always treasure it..I was so blessed all through my cancer treatments and met really wonderful people, especialy Susan Heimbigner who is absolutely the sweetest lady in the world.  She makes me want to strive to be the best I can be......I hope to be half the person she is....and this project does so much to boost the morale of patients in treatment.....I cried happy tears when I got my bag, they were the first happy tears in a long line of many sad ones..I felt that I too, could be 'victorious'"

July 9, 2012

Vicki E. - "I was at the cancer center today (wearing my sassy red sparkle cap), and saw a woman in an adjacent room also wearing a sparkle cap - but hers was black.  We weren't close enough to speak, but words weren't needed as she touched her cap and smiled and I did the same.  Susan, it occurred to me that your caps create a bond among strangers that would not otherwise exist.  I hope you know the beautiful impact that your caps create, sometimes without a single word being spoken.  Thank you for all you do!"

June 30, 2012

Vicki E. - "Susan, I meant to tell you that I saw a woman wearing one of your signature sparkle caps when I was at SCOA for chemo last week.  Seeing the cap reminded me again what a beautiful ministry your sparkle caps bring to someone at a time when they need it the most.  Your project touches so many lives and hearts.  Know that you are doing good work - God's work - and making a difference, one cap at a time."

March 29, 2012

Karen A. - "Thank you for the cap that my mom got from you.  I am touched that there are people like you, projects like this.  I am touched beyond words, and I just wanted to thank you."

"What amazes me is that the world seems like such a dark place, full of more evil and hatred than good. Not long ago, I would have said that people don't care about other people anymore. This project has shown me that there are complete strangers who care very much. What you are doing shines light into a time of darkness. Sometimes it feels like God isn't in the world, but The Sparkle Caps Project and people like you remind me that He is."

February 14, 2012

Shanta M. - "Thank you so much for my sparkle cap.  I love it.  Yellow is my favorite color, and my angel I love her.  I am so thankful for all your support and letter.  Thank U so much."

October 31, 2011

Karen H. - "I am a gift bag recipient. Having cancer is so overwhelming and when you receive a special gift it can help make you feel so good and special. I feel so blessed to have received my gift bag and I have also made a very special friend in the process, whom I will cherish always. I will finish my Herceptin on 12/19/2011. Thanks again for all that you do by making cancer a little easier to deal with..God Bless You!!!"

October 30, 2011

Jill S. - "Wanted to thank you for blessing my sister-in-law with a gift bag.  I know God has his hand in your ministry because the 2 books you placed in her bag were one's she specifically had wanted.  One was the exact title she wanted and the other was a topic that she was wanting to explore.  Only God could have guided your hands to put those 2 exact books in her bag!  The words of encouragement have meant so much to her and of course she LOVES her sparkle cap.  Thank you for using your cancer journey to bring hope and comfort to those who are facing cancer now.  I wish you much success in your new journey with The Sparkle Caps Project."
